Why You Need to Start a Blog, TODAY!

For years, I wanted to start a blog, but countless fears and tons of self-doubt held me back. But on May 11, 2017, I faced all my fears and published my first blog post! I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. The possibility that no one would believe in me, terrified me. And, the prospect of it not going anywhere caused me to doubt myself even more. Looking back on those first posts reminds me of how much I’ve grown both as a person and as a writer. I will forever be grateful that I took that leap of faith and started ‘Heather’s Ambitions.’
If you’re struggling with the idea of starting a blog like I was, I’m going to give you 10 reasons why you should start a blog! These are all things that I’ve gained and learned from writing a blog for almost 15 months. I can personally attest that the benefits of writing a blog outweigh the negatives 10 to 1. (To be honest, the only real negative is how much time it takes to produce good content.)

1. Blogging Improves your Writing, Editing, Photography, and More!

One of the coolest parts about running a blog is the fact that I can observe how much I’ve grown in countless areas. I look back at my first blog posts and laugh at how bad all of them were. Back then, the manual settings on a camera mystified me. My writing skills were choppy, my editing skills were non-existent, and my photo editing skills left much to be desired. Over the hours and days that I’ve spent working on my blog, I’ve honed these skills without spending any money on them!
The best teacher is good ol’ practice. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Your first blog post will be messy. You’re probably going to look back at it in a year and laugh at all your mistakes. But, that’s okay. The only direction to go is up! The hardest step to make is always the first, don’t be afraid to start.

2. A Blog Helps You Connect with People

I’ve gotten to know a lot of incredible people because I started my blog. And, I’ve gotten to share my story with dozens of people all over the world. I love looking at the world map on the analytics of my blog and seeing how many countries have visited my blog. I’m still baffled that people from all over the world have read my blog and have gotten to know me and my message. I’m astounded that blogging gives you the opportunity to connect with people all over the world from your laptop!

3. You Can Make a Difference

Blogging gives you this incredible opportunity to transform the world with your words! Even if you only reach one person, that’s one person you wouldn’t have been able to reach before. Without the internet, it took days and years to spread your ideas to enough people to change the world. Now, you can spend a few hours and have a blog up and running and getting attention.
I’m flabbergasted at how cheap and easy it is to share information these days. You may not be able to change the lives of everyone in the world, but you could change the world for one person. The number of people who have read my posts and commented on them that I have helped them is insane. I’m merely this young adult writing a blog about my passions, yet I’m reaching people and making a difference. I don’t understand it at all.

4. You Can Improve Your Time Management Skills

Okay, if you read my last post, then you know that I used to be atrocious at Time Management. (LOL, who am I kidding? I’m still dreadful at it.) But I’ve gotten a lot better at it over the years. Especially because I started my blog.
When you start a blog and begin to build a following, people start to count on you to routinely publish content. And, you have to learn how to work writing posts into your weekly routine.

5. You Can Use Your Blog to Educate Others

I’m sure that there is at least one thing that you’re marvelous at doing. Whether it’s writing novels, baking cakes, or making costumes for comic book conventions. You can start a blog and share your knowledge of that topic with the world.
I’m definitely no expert on adulting, entrepreneurship, or mental health. But I’ve learned a lot of tips and I love sharing them with people.

6. Blogging Gives You a Place to Dable in Different Topics and Styles of Writing

You can write a blog about any topic or any number of topics and grow an audience with the same passions as you!
If you’ve followed my blog from the beginning then you’ve probably seen how many different topics I’ve written about on here. My first few blog posts were in this order: A Recipe, a ‘Day in my Life’ post, a Travel Post, a DIY, and a post about how death has affected my life. (Out of these, the post on death is the only one still available to read on my blog.) As I’ve written about so many different things, I’ve fallen in love with specific topics. Particularly, entrepreneurship, mental health, How to Adult, inspiration, and more. But, I never would have realized the things I’m passionate about if I didn’t try to write about them.
It’s okay to not know what your blogging niche is at the very beginning of your blog. As you continue to write and connect with people, you’ll learn what topics both you and your audience want to learn more about. Don’t be afraid to try new things. And, if you ever reach a point where you’re not inspired with what you’re writing about, you can completely rebrand your blog. It’s not that hard and your audience will understand. If they don’t, you’ll find a new audience that believes in what you’re doing and what you’re are going to do.

7. Your Words Can Inspire Others

I don’t know how many people I’ve inspired directly. But I do know that there are countless bloggers who have inspired me over the years. And, you can do the same with your writing! Your little blog could start an entire movement. Don’t be afraid to reach for the stars.
What if you could use your message to build up the entire world? Would you do it? Why wouldn’t you? What is holding you back from reaching your dreams?

8. Starting a Blog Can Teach You How to Build a Website

When I started my first blog, I didn’t know anything about building a website. I knew that WordPress is a good platform from research. But I really didn’t know anything else about building or maintaining a website. And now here I am. I’ve written hundreds of blog posts. Switched from a free blog on WordPress.com to Self-Hosting with SiteGround. Learned what SEO is and how to use it to grow my blog. And so much more. If someone had told me back in 2017 everything that I would learn how to do and be doing in just a few short months, I would have thought they were crazy. Don’t ever give up on your dreams because you can make them come true.

9. Blogging Gives You a Place to Practice Marketing Tactics Like SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Search Engine Optimization is like a game to me. Adding in the proper keywords while making the content flow around them is like building a puzzle.
Writing a blog gives you a unique opportunity to be able to practice SEO with every post that you make. And you can use different keywords for different topics. Enabling you to learn what attracts the right audience to your blog.

10. You Can Make Memories and Have a Place to Share Your Memories With the World

Blogging gives you a platform to make and share memories with people all over the world while you spread your message.
