12 C. S. Lewis Quotes to Live By

C. S. Lewis’s writings have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, my dad read us “The Chronicles of Narnia” multiple times. As I grew up, I read more and more of his books and started finding his quotes all over the internet. The more I read of him, the more I loved what he had to say and how he said it. I was also a total history nerd as a child (lol, I still am) and I would read biographies for fun. I think I’ve only read 2 biographies about C. S. Lewis, but I’ve always been fascinated by his life and the events that shaped him into the person that he became.

Fun Fact, his full name is actually, Clive Staples Lewis.

Today, I’m sharing 12 quotes by C.S. Lewis that I think everyone should live by and remember.

Seagull standing on the beach. Above the bird it says, "One of the most cowardly things ordinary people do is to shut their eyes to the facts." - C. S. Lewis -

“One of the most cowardly things ordinary people do is to shut their eyes to facts.”

– C. S. Lewis, Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader –

Every day, humanity is surrounded by facts:

There are hundreds of more facts that I could name, but these issues are sickening to me. Mental health is such a serious issue and yet every day, it is still stigmatized and ignored. We need to stop this. We need to open our eyes to the facts and do something about these issues. People all over the world are constantly being held back because they struggle with serious mental health issues. Let’s keep the conversation going. Do you struggle with mental health issues? How have they affected your life?

Back of a female wearing a white beanie, black t-shirt, and red cardigan. To her side it says "Something deep in the human heart breaks at the thought of a life of mediocrity." - C. S. Lewis -

“Something deep in the human heart breaks at the thought of a life of mediocrity.”

-C. S. Lewis –

Challenges push us to better ourselves and we thrive in that environment. But when we settle for mediocrity, we lose part of what makes us human and become complacent and accepting of how things are instead of pushing ourselves to make things better. Nothing will change unless you push yourself and others to make a difference. Let’s stop being mediocre and instead step up and be divergent.

I’m done settling for mediocrity, are you?

Small purple flower. To the Side of the flower it says "Surely what a man does when he is taken off his guard is the best evidence for what sort of man he is." - C. S. Lewis - in cursive lettering.

“Surely what a man does when he is taken off his guard is the best evidence for what sort of man he is.”

– C. S. Lewis –

Any person can seem good when they’re talking to you. But, startle them or say something that will upset them and you’ll get a glimpse of what that person is truly like. Do they have self-control and remain calm? Or do they shout and scream and cause harm? Someone who isn’t control of their reactions to things and instead lets the situation control their reaction, has no place in my life.

Waves crashing on a jetty of rocks. Sun rising above the horizon. On the Sunrise it says, "My prayer is that when I die, all of hell rejoices that I am out of the fight." - C. S. Lewis -

“My prayer is that when I die, all of hell rejoices that I am out of the fight.”

– C. S. Lewis –

Ephesians 6:12 KJV says “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

The Christian life is one of fighting against the attempts of Satan and his minions to make us stumble on our journey of growing in our faith. Satan doesn’t have to send minions to convince the world to do his bidding, it already does. We Christians ought to fight this evil to the point that hell rejoices when we die and they don’t have to deal with us anymore.

Female standing with her back to the ocean where the sun is rising. She's wearing a red sweater and black jeans with her hands are on the back of her head. To her side it says, "Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back everything is different." - C. S. Lewis -

“Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back everything is different.”

– C. S. Lewis –

In the past year, I’ve survived a category 3 hurricane, started writing regularly for Hannah Ashton Content, wrote dozens of blog posts, started a second twitter and gained hundreds of followers, rebranded my entire blog and switched to self-hosting, lost a pastor, and got a job! Somedays, I wish I could go back to who I was a year ago and give her a heads-up about how much things are going to change, but then life wouldn’t be the same. I feel like I’m a completely different person than I was a year ago which is so weird because it doesn’t seem like that much has happened.

Female sitting on the road, dressed in al black. She's looking to the side where it says, "Be weird. Be Random. Be who you are. Because you never know who could love the person you hide." - C. S. Lewis -

“Be weird. Be random. Be who you are. Because you never know who would love the person you hide.”

– C. S. Lewis –

I’ve always been known as this weird, awkward person and that’s because years ago, I decided that there is no point in being fake. Because, if someone doesn’t like who I really am, then why would I want to associate with them?

Learning to accept yourself is probably the most confidence building thing that you can do. No one is perfect. We all have these little quirks and flaws. I think that the things that make each person different are fascinating. If all humans were exactly the same and loved all the same things, life would be monotonous.

Waves crashing on a rock. On the picture it says "My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust - But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with - when I called it unjust?" - C. S. Lewis -

“My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust – But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with – when I called it unjust?”

– C. S. Lewis –

I love how C. S. Lewis uses this rhetorical question to prove that God exists and that He is perfect. God is the ultimate measure of justice. Romans 12:19 KJV says “ Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” God reserves the right to avenge the wrongs of this world because He is the ultimate right. At the core of His very being, God is just.

Romans 2:14-15 say, “For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) ” All humans have the law of God written on our hearts. We all know right from wrong. Without this knowledge, how would we know that there is injustice in the world?

Female wearing a dark hood and a yellow bandana standing in front of tall grass. Above her head it says, "There is someone I love, even though I don't approve of what he does. There is someone I accept, though some of his thoughts and actions revolt me. There is someone I forgive though he hurts the people I love the most. That person is me." - C. S. Lewis -

“There is someone I love, even though I don’t approve of what he does. There is someone I accept, though some of his thoughts and actions revolt me. There is someone I forgive though he hurts the people I love the most. That person is me.”

– C. S. Lewis –

I love this quote because it reminds me that I need to love myself in spite of all of my flaws and shortcomings. No one is perfect, including me. We are all worthy of love, especially loving ourselves. And we all deserve that kind of love.

Bright colored sunset. On the clouds it says, "Life with God is not immunity from difficulties, but peace in difficulties." - C. S. Lewis -

“Life with God is not immunity from difficulties, but peace in difficulties.”

– C. S. Lewis –

There’s been a lot of hard times in my life as a Christian. But throughout all of them, Jesus Christ has been my anchor. The peace that I receive from Him is one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received. He is someone I can always count on and trust. He forgives me even when I don’t forgive myself. I don’t deserve His love at all.

Female sitting on a tree wearing a black t-shirt, red cardigan, a white beanie, and black glasses. Above her head it says, "You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending." - C. S. Lewis -

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

– C. S. Lewis –

History is written by the past but the future will be written by your hands. You have the power in your hands to change your story for the better. There are countless things that I wish I could go back in time and change. Things I wish I had never said, people I wish I’d never met. But no one, not even me, can change the past. I’m trying to use my past is a lesson to change my future for the better.

How are you going to use your past to make your future better?

Green ferns with the words, "Human history is the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy." - C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity - in white cursive lettering

“Human history is the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.”

– C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity –

Every time I try to find true happiness in something other than God, I fail and end up making myself more and more miserable. But as soon as I let go of my expectations and plans and instead start seeking first the kingdom of God, I become overwhelmed with Joy.

Two hands forming a hear around the sunrise. On the sun it says, "Love is never wasted, for its value does not rest upon reciprocity." - C. S. Lewis - in black curly letters.

“Love is never wasted, for its value does not rest upon reciprocity.”

– C. S. Lewis –

Love is something that I don’t really understand. There are countless people who I love as friends and family, but I don’t think I’ve ever truly loved someone romantically. But that’s okay. Love doesn’t have to be romantic for you to experience the wonder of it. True love, is seeing all the faults that someone has and deciding to be there for them anyway. It’s putting the interests of someone else before your own.
