Quotes have always impacted me because I can use other people’s words to describe things that are so hard I can’t find words to describe them. Every so often, I find quotes that make me stop and think about what I’m doing with my life. Will what I’m doing matter in 5 years? Is it helping me reach my ultimate goals? In my final days do I want to be remembered for what I’m doing right now? That’s why today I’m sharing 10 quotes that have changed my life’s perspective recently.
“If you wish to move mountains tomorrow, you must start by lifting stones today.” -African Proverb-
I have so many big dreams that I want to accomplish in my life, but I can’t do them all in one day. Life comes to us one day at a time and we have to do the little things today to be able to move the giant things tomorrow. No one starts lifting weights by lifting 300 pounds. You have to start small to someday reach your goal.
“To love at all is to be vulnerable.”
-C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves-
I believe this to my core. When you love someone, you have to be honest with them and the truth hurts sometimes. Whether it can hurt you or someone else. You have to be willing to let go of control and step out in faith that this person won’t destroy you. And, if they destroy you, you put yourself back together and move on to loving the next person. Because a life without love is not one I want to live.
“Not everyone deserves to know the real you. Let them criticize who they think you are.”
This is something that I struggle with every day. Somedays, my thoughts are so loud that I’m so very quiet and people think I’m shy. Somedays, my mouth moves faster than my brain and people think I’m loud and obnoxious. But, I don’t owe anyone an explanation for how I’m acting. It’s my choice how much I reveal about myself.
“If it won’t matter in 5 years, don’t spend more than 5 minutes getting angry about it.”
I used to struggle with really bad anger issues. And, I still deal with anger and/or frustration and lashing out on a daily basis. But, this quote reminds me to take a moment and think about if it’s really worth expelling the energy of getting angry. I bet 9 times out of 10 it’s not worth it.
“I am not what happened to me, I am what I chose to become.”
My past is filled with ups and downs. Days of joy and days of sorrow. But, those things don’t define me. I am defined by what I decide to define myself by. No one else can define me or decide what my potential is. That is my job. I am in charge of my destiny.
“We are all a little broken, but the last time I checked, broken crayons still color the same.”
If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you would know that this is one of my favorite quotes. It first appeared in my ‘Quotes to Think About for June 2017‘ It’s also appeared twice on my Instagram. (here and here)
I love this quote because life isn’t just about the good times. We have to remember that everyone goes through tough stuff. And, sometimes, that stuff breaks us. We have to help each other put themselves back together and move on. Just because we’re broken doesn’t mean we’re useless. We all have a purpose.
How are you going to help someone heal today?
“A woman’s heart should be so close to God that a man should have to chase Him to find her.”
Yes, I love C.S. Lewis, I could probably do an entire blog post on his quotes and books that have changed my life.
This quote is actually the background on my phone. I set it there to remind me what relationship is important right now for me to pursue. Every day I’m single is a bit of a struggle. I’ve had this deep desire to be married and have a family of my own since I was a little girl. But, that isn’t God’s plan for me right now. I’m working on growing closer and closer to God every day. I want a man who is chasing God to be mine. I don’t want him to be pursuing me as much as he’s pursuing God.
You will never be truly satisfied without God. No relationship can replace the God-shaped hole each of us has in our hearts. He is the only One who can help us thrive.
“Saying someone can’t be sad because someone else may have it worse, is like saying someone can’t be happy because someone else might have it better.”
I love this quote. It doesn’t matter how bad you’re sadness is, you still deserve to feel that emotion and let your body process it. If you don’t let your body process your emotions it’s not good. I’m so bad at actually processing emotions. I just shove it all down until I explode and get really upset for a while but then I’m good. I could probably avoid a lot of explosions if I let myself process things… But, oh well, maybe someday.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view – until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
– To Kill A Mockingbird –
I try to live by this quote. I love getting to know people – especially how they think. What makes them tick. What sets them off. What calms them down. And why those things do that. What in their past molded them into who they are today? Who hurts them so bad that they have trust issues? How did they hurt them? Why did they hurt them?
I’m a really curious person who probably knows more about you then you realize. Analyzing people is my hobby…
Sometimes people are beatiful not in looks, not in what they say, just in what they are.”
-The Book Thief –
If you ask me what my favorite book is, I will answer in a heartbeat, “The Book Thief.” Ever since I read this book for the first time 3 years ago, I’ve been obsessed. It’s just amazing.
This quote summarizes my friendships in a sentence. I can never pinpoint what about someone is beautiful, it’s just who they are.
